Volcano monitoring and Research

The observatory was founded in 1960 for geophysical studies on the mechanism of volcanic eruptions and the prediction of volcanic eruptions. The main subjects now being studied are as follows:

1. Mechanism of volcanic explosions and earthquakes
2. Magma storage and supply systems
3. Subsurface structure of volcanoes
4. Deep structure of the Kirishima volcanic zone
5. Paleo-magnetic study of volcanic rocks
6. Collaborative study on eruption mechanism at Indonesian volcanoes
